The confirmation of Heartstopper’s third season is indeed a cause for celebration, as the second season once again enthralled its audience on Netflix. The cherished LGBTQ+ series returned on August 3, with an eight-episode continuation exploring the evolving relationship between Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) among the backdrop of Truman and Higgs. However, what’s next for the beloved Heartstopper pair and their friends? This is everything you need to know about Heartstopper season three. Continue reading for more details.

Heartstopper season 3 release date

The announcement of Heartstopper’s second season by Netflix was accompanied by the exciting news that a third installment, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, was also in the pipeline. The official Netflix Twitter account posted a quick clip of Oseman sketching Charlie and Nick, captioning it with “2 more seasons.” The release date for the third season, however, is a bit uncertain. Speculation suggests that filming for the third season could begin as early as October 2023, according to What’s on Netflix, though there’s no official confirmation yet. Given that Heartstopper is a UK production, it’s unlikely that ongoing Hollywood strike actions will impact its schedule.

If the filming proceeds as speculated, we might be seeing Nick and Charlie again by the end of 2024, based on the previous season’s release schedule. While there haven’t been any major casting news, it’s reasonable to expect Kit Connor and Joe Locke to reprise their roles as Nick and Charlie, integral to making Heartstopper what it is. The supporting cast, including best friends Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tao (William Gao), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), and Isaac (Tobie Donovan), will continue to accompany the duo in their relationship journey. Based on Oseman’s graphic novels, we can predict that a significant portion of the main cast will return for season three.

In a poignant scene from the second season finale, Charlie reveals to Nick the severe impact homophobic bullying had on him after his coming out at school. Subsequently, Nick finds himself on the verge of declaring his feelings for Charlie. The season ends with a cliffhanger as Charlie, on his way home, types “I love you” to Nick, his finger hovering over the send button. Our understanding of what the third season of Heartstopper might entail is informed by Oseman’s books. While the second season follows the school trip to Paris from the third volume of the graphic novels, the first season encapsulates the initial two volumes of Oseman’s series.
