Chandrayaan 3, India’s third moon mission, has captured global attention as people eagerly track its current live location. These include successfully navigating through lunar orbit, separating the lander, executing several deboost maneuvers, and performing a powered descent phase for a soft landing. The most recent updates on Chandrayaan 3’s live location were shared by ISRO on July 25th.
On July 25, between 2 pm and 3 pm IST, Chandrayaan 3 successfully completed its fifth Earth-bound orbit-raising maneuver. The next scheduled event is the TransLunar Injection (TLI), reportedly slated for August 1, 2023. The precise timing of the TLI is yet to be announced, but it’s expected to take place between midnight and 1 am IST.
Upon reaching the moon, the spacecraft is expected to settle into a 127609 km x 236 km orbit, subject to subsequent confirmations. According to ISRO’s statement, “The orbit-raising maneuver (Earth-bound perigee firing) was performed successfully from ISTRAC/ISRO, Bengaluru. The spacecraft is expected to attain an orbit of 127609 km x 236 km. The achieved orbit will be confirmed after the observations. The next firing, the TransLunar Injection (TLI), is planned for August 1, 2023, between 12 midnight and 1 am IST.”
ISRO has provided an image showcasing the spacecraft’s location in Earth’s fifth and final orbit. Prior to this, ISRO reported on Chandrayaan 3’s fourth orbit-raising maneuver on July 20. On that day, between 2 and 3 pm IST, Chandrayaan 3 successfully executed its fourth orbit-raising maneuver, moving it one step closer to the moon.
On July 20, in celebration of International Moon Day 2023, ISRO released an image of the spacecraft in its fourth orbit. ISRO said, “India celebrates #InternationalMoonDay 2023 by propelling Chandrayaan-3 a step closer to the Moon. The fourth orbit-raising maneuver (Earth-bound perigee firing) is performed successfully from ISTRAC/ISRO, Bengaluru. The next firing is planned for July 25, 2023, between 2 and 3 pm IST.”
On July 18, ISRO reported that Chandrayaan 3’s third orbit-raising maneuver was successfully performed from ISTRAC/ISRO, Bengaluru, resulting in a 51400 km x 228 km orbit. As of July 25, Chandrayaan 3 is located in its fifth and final orbit, with its closest distance to Earth being 233 km and the farthest 71,351 km.
